It's hard not to be all smiles when you land a trophy yellowtail like this one that Darrell George of New Mexico pulled up in shallow water just off Punta Perico behind him. The big yellows are eating sardines and yo-yo iron.
Our amiga, Donna Thompson, out fished her husband, Roger, at the south end of Cerralvo Island, taking three of these big yellowtail to Roger's one! Live sardines did the trick. Reach Roger's first-hand account below.
Not bad for a first time trip...cabrilla (Mexican seabass) like this aren't easy to come by. Sure, they'll bite, but then you still have to get then outta the rocks! Ray Herrerra yanked this bad boy just out of Muertos Bay.

Big-eye jacks have moved into the shallow areas along the beaches and are great light tackle sport not to mention great eating. Lots of anglers confuse them with their cousins the jack crevalle which are also feisty, but don't taste very good at all so many anglers throw back the big-eye jacks. Our captains do a good job of telling our anglers which ones to keep! Speaking of good-eating, the seabass ready to fillet are great too!
Jill and I had a great time at the Portland Expo Center at the hunting and fishing show! We have so many amigos in Oregon. What a pretty state it is. But the Tailhunter 2011 Road Tour is on the move again! We set up in Phoenix Thursday to Sunday at Cardinal Football Stadium for the ISE show. Come say hi and book your 2011 La Paz fishing trip! La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 12-20, 2011
A more typical week of fishing this past week. At least in terms of weather. The near-freezing stuff we had two weeks ago has been replaced with days in the high 7o’s and 80’s like normal with fishing more typical of the season. Winds still blow northerly every few days, but overall, not an unpleasant week and fishing reflected it. In fact, we had some real exciting stuff!
Inshore species continued to be the mainstay with jack crevalle, sierra, yellow snapper, big eye jacks and some smaller roosterfish primarily. However, there were some other reasons to be optimistic as well. Some of the large pargo were hooked…and lost (which is not unusual) but at least we know the big boys are around. As well, we had some really trophy sized cabrilla taken (seabass) and finally a few of the larger homeguard moss-back-style yellowtail. There’s a few spots that just blue up nicely… All in shallow water not too far from shore. Literally within 50 yards off the rocky areas around Punta Perrico and near the south side of Cerralvo.
Roger Thompson’s wife (show above) got three nice fish and Roger had this to say:
” There is a HUGE school of yellowtail just off shore on the south east end of Cerralvo, where they are getting bait. We pulled up on 15 or 20 birds working the water and we saw hundreds of yellowtail in the water. ALL, 25 to 35 pounders! No shit! That was before we got sardinas. We trolled thru them with rapalas and tossed iron with no luck. We ran in and picked up bait and it was on!
We’ve got anglers going all week so hopefully, we’ll have more great reports to post up!

With waters showing a bit of warmth this weekend, jacks like roosterfish, jack crevalle and this African pompano are making more frequent forrays up into the shallow beaches. Great fish on flyrod or light tackle.
It's a little early to be seeing roosterfish this size normally, this time of year, but you just never know with these migratory fish. Captain Adolfo shows off a nice 20 pounder taken near Punta Arenas...famous as the "roosterfish capital of the world!"

Thanks and gracias to all our amigos who visited us this week at the Northwest Sportsmens Expo in Portland this past week. It was great to see so many of you including our buddy Bob Solee who's wife Becky always makes him bring is fresh chocolate chip cookies and milk to the booth...to keep up our strength. Jill and I will be making our next stop on the 2011 Tailhunter Tour at Cardinal Football Stadium in Phoenix 24-27 of February. We'll have our booth right there on the football field indoors!

WARMER TEMPERATURES RETURN…SORT OF…and BRING BACK A BITE!
La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 6-13, 2011
The week started off with a continuation of that cold snap from last week when temps dropped into the high 30’s and La Paz was more like Seattle than Baja, Mexico. During that time, fish were locked down and not-responsive except for a few small cabrilla here and there. However, things bounced back and the pendulum swung the other way and soon we were registering highs in the upper 80’s incredibly. And just like that, we started to get fish.
Nothing very spectacular, but there were some exciting bites on small fire-cracker yellowtail in the 8-12 pounds and a few in the 25-30 pound class. In addition to the yellows, we continued to get good numbers of cabrilla including one that went 18 pounds plus some pargo, sierra and bonito so all-in-all not so bad fishing. A few nicer roosterfish too up along the beach. Not all of them were in the “chew” mode, but a few were hooked and seeing them around is very enouraging for the next few weeks.

Whales at Magdalena Bay are in full swing right now and we’re offering daily trips out there for whale-watching tours which will usually last in through March.

RECORD COLD SNAP AND WINDS PUT MAJOR DAMPER ON FISHING
La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 30-Feb. 6, 2011
I can’t remember the last time I’ve put out two weeks of fishing reports like this. For those of you who’ve been reading our reports all these years I’m sure you’ll agree. This is the Baja and bad fishing reports are just…well, nuts!
Like the U.S. and seemingly most of north America, the weather has been the big issue. As things north of the border were subject to cold, snow, wet and wind, the residual effects came south as well. (Please keep it north from now on…everyone in La Paz is freezing cold!) Although by comparison, 72 degree days and 50 degree nights is nothing if you’re in Boston or Canada this past week, it’s unseasonably chilly for southern Baja. It actually dropped into the high 30’s a few times! Actually, these have been record low temperatures and winds! One of my amigas on the East Cape told me that the waves have been “like hurricane waves this past week!”
So much for global warming, but… Everyone is wearing long pants and jackets! Some Washington folks off a cruise ship laughingly called us “weenies” as they strolled on the beach in shorsts and t-shirts.
Probably the worst part is the northern winds that have forced cancelations of many activities from snorkeling and scuba to island trips. It’s just too rough. Even for fishing and many folks decided it’s best to just sit by the pool or walk around town. I mean, at 72 degrees and sunny, it’s still not exactly stay-inside weather! But, being on the water was not so good. We didn’t cancel any of our fishing trips, but the hearty folks who fished with us were real gamers.
We did all of our fishing out of Muertos and that was about it. Almost impossible most of the week to get to the island for bait or to fish too far out of the bay. This is highly unusual. Crazy weather. But the guys still got some sierra and decent numbers of cabrilla. Nothing big however. And some larger pargo were lost. By the time you’re reading this, things look to be on the upswing with temperatures this week heading back into the 80’s and winds diminishing…somewhat. I have no doubt the fishing will swing back up as well.
From what I’m hearing around the peninsula this past week or so has got to be some of the toughest and poorest fishing in ages so it’s not just La Paz! So much for global warming…
On the upside, the whales have arrived in good numbers over at Mag Bay and we had some great trips out there this past week at Lopez Mateos to do some whale watching in the lagoons.

A STRANGE AND UNUSUAL WEEK
La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January. 23-30, 2011
Well, to be perfectly honest, fishing wasn’t that remarkable this week. It was a little cold and windy some days which is typical. Fishing was so-so. We got some sierra, and some cabrilla and some yellowtail, a pargo or two and a couple of dorado. Everyone we sent out caught fish and had a nice time, but it was nothing to write home about.
That’s the truth. One of those unusual weeks…really unusual!
But we also tell people it can be like that this time of year. They understrand that. They enjoy time on the water and since many of them come from freezing places like Minnesota and Colorado and New York, they’re happy just to be fishing instead of digging out of snow. Fishing was not stellar…so what..it beats being in a blizzard. Fishing might have been less-than-spectacular. But, it’s also Baja and it can change just as quickly too! Wind predictions look better for this coming week so we plan to have better reports for you in the next weekly report.

Dorado in January! It's not typical, but a nice suprise but we're getting a few every week. Arnie and Kathy Sandness were on their first trip to La Paz this past week from Arizona and took this nice pair fishing with our Las Arenas fleet just out've Muertos Bay.
More typical of the fishing during the winter months are these cabrilla that are a great catch inshore right now. Most fish are about 3-5 pounds and can be found pretty much anywhere there's some rocky structure and have a habit of hitting hard and dashing back into their holes!
Gray whales have started moving into their yearly winter residence at Bahia Magdalena. For a great day trip, ask us about setting up a trip for you and your family.
It was great to see so many amigos at the California State Fairgrounds this past week at the International Sportsmen's Expo. It was a spectacular show and it was great to see so many of you and have you book your 2011 trips to La Paz. DORADO AGAIN SPARK A MIXED BITE BUT YELLOWTAIL SHOWING SIGNS!
La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 17-24, 2011
About half the week it was pretty windy making it, not impossible, but certainly uncomfortable or difficult to fish. Other days, it was actually rather nice. We got a weird strange mix of species which kept it interesting. A few small firecracker dorado mixed it up with sierra, bonito, some cabrilla and pargo made for quite a buffet of species.
Besides the wind, there was some red-tide that came into La Paz Bay that made me glad that we kept most of our fishing out’ve Las Arenas instead of La Paz.
However, we’re getting some really encouraging signs of yellowtail schools north of La Paz near and around Espiritu Santo Island. We’re gonna send out s few exploratory trips because private boats and commercial pangeros are seeing some nice jags of breaking fish here and there right on the surface with some reports of larger 20-30 pound fish rolling and foaming in the upper water column on schools of bait. We’ll keep you posted!

The California grey whales are starting to arrive in Bahia Magdalena for their annual winter residence. They usually hang out mating and giving birth through March and it’s a great opportunity to observe these great animals up-close in the warm calm waters of the lagoon. La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January 9-16, 2011
It was a cool and windy week, but the fish we caught indicate that we still have some warm waters around. In addition to pargo, sierra and cabrilla…normally cool water fish, we also got into a few little jags of dorado. Nothing large with fish in the 8-15 pound class but fun fish and a nice surprise just-the-same. All our fishing is mostly out of Muertos Bay near Las Arenas using live sardines.
We had some really nice big schools of jack crevalle move up into the sandy beaches near Las Arenas a few days. These schools can be anywhere from a dozen to several hundred fish and they are great to get into whether 10 pounders or 30 pounders, these fish can really tear it up. There’s a reason the Mexican name for them is “toro” (Bull). They’ll eat live bait, lures, surface poppers…they’re not picky. Fantastic on light tackle or on the flyrod. Unfortunately, they’re not really good to eat unlike their cousins, the yellowtail and amberjack and pompano, but they all have that slugger attitude when hooked. Hopefully, with the showing of the jack crevalle, we’ll start seeing more roosterfish as well.
WHALE WATCHING TRIPS TO LOPEZ MATEOS STARTING UP
We start running whale watching trips from La Paz beginning this week over to Lopez Mateos in Magdalena Bay. From January to March, the grey whales by the hundreds take up residence in the warm, shallow waters of the bay to mate and give birth. Really a great life experience for the whole family. Ask us about setting it up for you.
CABIN FEVER CLASSIC 2011
Our Cabin Fever Classic Event is all set. This is our 10th year and will be held April 9-13. This is a fun low-pressure get-together. Many of our “Tailhunter Tribe” return year-after-year. We don’t guarantee fish, but we always catch all kinds of things. One year, we got tons of roosters. Another year dorado and yellowtail showed up. Another we got 18 different species of fish. We never know. But, it’s always alot of fun folks who just are tired of winter and want to get their toes in the sand and their hands around something colder than a snow shovel! Here’s the details:

We are definitely into sierra season with quite a few of these speedy sportfish around now which is great for inshore light tackle. Captain Ramiro holds up a nice one.
A fairly typical catch with our Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay anglers...decent size yellowtail and sierra...all close to shore.
Grey Whale Season is here...from January to March, the grey whales take up residence in the shallow warm waters around Bahia Magdalena. For a great family experience of a lifetime where you get up close with these great animals in the calm waters of Mag Bay. let Tailhunters set up your trip!

ANGLERS WORK INSHORE FOR YELLOWTAIL, SIERRA, and ROCK SPECIES
La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 2-9, 2011
Some cloudy skies and wind this week in between some really nice fishing weather. Nice time to be in town. I think most of our anglers this week have been surprised at the variety of fish. Most of our fishing has been in the Muertos Bay area where even if the winds are a little blustery from the north, we can still be fairly protected since the fish are close and we’re on the lee side of the island.
Species this week included pargo and sierra as well as cabrilla, but also a nice jag or two of yellowtail. Not big fish, but the yellowtail are certainly getting a little bigger than in the last few weeks and fun on light tackle or using the iron. The yellowtail were about 10 pounds before, but this week some skinnier 10-15 pounders were making themselves known.
The other species readily ate live and chunked dead sardines. “Chunking” involves tossing handfuls of mashed and whole dead sardines into the current and letting it drift down. Anglers then pin another dead sardine to a hook and strip off handfuls of slack line which also drifts down with the rest of the “chunk.” It’s an effective way of getting stubborn fish like pargo, snapper, and cabrilla out’ve their rocky hideouts. Of course, once they bite, you have to turn them quick to kee’p them from heading back into the hole and cutting you off.
WHALE WATCHING SEASON
By the way, we’re also sending out whale watching trips now to Magdalena Bay as the grey whales have started taking up their winter residences in the shallow lagoons. Usually, the whales are around from January to March with February being optimal for viewing with the whales and their calves often coming right up to the boats.
FISHING AND HUNTING SHOWS

As Darrell George and Matt Collins from Colorado said, "It was pretty good fishing for December!" Actually, pretty good fishing any time of the year, but this shows the mix that was possible this last week with smaller yellowtail, dorado, pargo and sierra on the beach at Muertos Bay fishing with Captain Victor.

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 26 to Jan 2, 2011
It’s been a real “chop suey” week of fishing here! It’s like everything was all mixed up with both warm and cold water fish all in the same spots! Literally, we must’ve had about 10 different species biting and some anglers got almost all 10 species fishing the same spot on the same day. Small yellowtail have now moved in that are in the 10 pound class but we also got some amberjack up to 30 pounds as well as jack crevalle, pargo, snapper, cabrilla, bonito, and sierra. But those same boats are still getting a smattering of dorado also…clearly a warm-water fish!
It just makes for some fun fishing when you get this kind of variety and all the fish are close to shore too eating live bait.
WE’LL BE IN DENVER!
We’re on the road finally and will be in Denver starting Wednesday to Sunday at the International Sportsmens Expo at the downtown Denver Convention Center. It’s always a great show and we’re looking forward to seeing all our amigos! Our booth will be in the same location as always. It’s freezing. As I’m writing this, it’s 2 degrees above zero. Definitely NOT La Paz weather and our van already broke down once in the snow! But it’s always a great trip into the Rockies and we look forward to the tour every year.
This is the start of our road tour for the year. Over the next 11 weeks we’ll be in 11 states doing all the major fishing/hunting shows so we’ll see you down the road. Next week, we’ll be in Billings, Montana. Then Sacramento CA.

We had a nice jag of smaller yellowtail and rainbow runners...close cousin to yellowtail...this week like the one held here by our amigo, Leonard Bishop. The fish are great on light tackle and great eating. Hopefully, some of the larger yellowtail will pop up soon!
Emily Duncan from Santa Barbara usually outfishes dad when she comes to visit and shows off the type of sierra we were getting this week. Pretty typical for this time of year. The sharp-toothed speedsters can come in packs!
SMALL YELLOWTAIL MAKE FIRST SHOWING OF THE SEASON
La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 19-26, 2010
A crazy mixed week of weather and fishing down here. Some days windy and other days nice, flat and sunny. Thankfully, the wet stuff that hit the West Coast of the U.S. this week didn’t make it down, but we still got winds.
Talk about a crazy week of fishing, we got warm water species like dorado, bonito and even had a marlin hookup, but at the same time…same days…and sometimes even the same panga, we got pargo, snapper, cabrilla (seabass) and even some smaller yellowtail and rainbow runners…all coldwater fish.
That’s kind of encouraging to hear about the yellowtail and rainbow runners. I’ve been getting alot of inquiries asking when the yellowtail will show up. I wish I had a crystal ball, but it really all just depends on the water temperatures. The best time is usually about Feb. or March to start and then through May. Again, it just depends on the water. The big jacks are cooler water fish so don’t count on catching yellowtail at the same time as dorado and tuna. It’s not impossible, just not real likely! But yellowtail are brutes when they come on strong! We’ll keep you posted.
Not many anglers down right now so you get the whole honey hole all to yourself. Live sardines are working best. Highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s in the day time and a pleasant mid-60’s at night. A great time to be down!

There's alot of sierra like this beauty that have moved into all kinds of shallow areas around La Paz and especially along the shoals just inside the bay. You definitely don't need to go out far to get into a great bite. Besides using bait, these toothy guys will readily hit flashy, shiny splashy lures like shiny feathers, trolled crank baits and shiny spoons. Thanks to William Boyd for this shot of his fish.
No promises during this time of the year, but sure...there's still dorado around. In fact, earlier in the week we had a pretty decent dorado bite that gave way when the winds picked up. But, there are still warm fingers of water around holding these great fish like the one being held by William Boyd.

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of December 12-19, 2010
For once, this past week was more typical of December fishing. Beautiful sunny weather puntuated some days by some extremely high winds then other days that are completely calm. Just no telling which days will be breezy and which days will be flat…so you just go out and do what you’re gonna do. It’s still going to beat mowing the lawn or sitting in traffic.
By the same token, fishing reflected the weather Earlier in the week when the winds were down everyone was surprised by dorado which bit nicely. They were a nice grade of fish as well and not too far from shore with fish up to about 18 pounds. For winter, that’s a decent fish and some of the anglers we had early in the week were fishing with light tackle or with flyrods. So, we had alot of happy folks with tired arms.
Later in the week, winds came up and the conditions dicated more inshore fishing. Accordingly our catches reflected more sierra, jack crevalle, bonito, snapper and cabrilla.
Everything is biting live bait right now so sardines and a good hook are pretty much all you need…except with sierra. Their sharp teeth are best thwarted with a bit of wire leader.
