Nice trophy yellowtail were again the centerpiece of the weekly bite as shown off here by popular Tailhunter Fleet Capt. Jorge and Phil Coo and Chris Cribbs from Los Angeles. The week started slowly with tough winds, but got better thru the week.

Talk about a FAT fish for a first timer...note not only this big yellowtail by Chris Pena, but also the calm waters AND HOW CLOSE TO SHORE! Only about 50 yards off just out of Muertos Bay!

Angelino, Chris Cribbs comes down at least 2 times a year and ALWAYS does well. His week started slowly, but he finally slammed his last day. Check out the size of this big fork-tail YT and the smile of Capt. Jorge also! The fish ate a live sardine.

For sure! The big pargo have moved in, but we're losing so many to the rocks! However, every now and then, we get one of the big boys like this one by Chris Pena. These guys are spawning in shallow waters right now.

Phil Coo always has a great time. He owns a bar in Los Angeles and comes to see us a few times a year and does well with Capt. Jorge holding up one of several big yellowtail he got.

Not exactly dorado season which is usually when the water is warmer, but we're starting to get a few dorado here and there which leads me to believe that waters are already warming. This mahi was taken just inside of Bahia de Los Muertos near Las Arenas.

Another nice big PHAT pargo (liso) aka "mullet snapper" being shown off at Muertos Bay where we've got our boats right now. These fish are just casting distance from shore and have moved into the shallow rocky areas around Punta Perico and Cerralvo Island.

Our good amigo for so many fishing years from Austin, TX, Ron Martis went home with a truckload of fillets after a great day of yellowtail fishing. Note the calm waters behind!

Barry Mendelson from Malibu CA got 3 of these pargo liso after a single day fishing.

Thanks to everyone who asked if we were OK after the earthquake this past week. Everyone is fine. Our bar and restaurant is fine (even tho' we're only about 20 feet from the water!). But our captains took no chances...just-in-case...pulling their pangas about 50-100 yards up from the water very high and very dry! Thanks to our amigo, James Davis, for the shot!

It was crazy utter madness and fun this past week at the Fred Hall Fishing & Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center with packed aisles and a great time seeing all the amigos. However, the Tailhunter International 2011 "road tour" moves on to it's final show of the season and we'll be at the International Sportsman's Expo in Salt Lake City this week from Thursday to Sunday!

Just a special shout-out and "thank you" again to our amigo, Charles Belnavis...tattoo artist supreme to so many of us in the fishing industry...who gave me one of the most unique gifts I have ever gotten! He spent more than 30 hours hand-painting this pair of Vans deck shoes with incredible underwater sportfishing scenes...one has a dorado and the other a billfish. The detail is amazing! He only makes two of these a year. He is the owner of the Shogun Tattoo Shop in Pasadena CA http://shoguntattoo.com/

AFTER SLOW START YELLOWTAIL AND PARGO AGAIN KICK IT!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report from Tailhunter International for Week of March 7-14, 2011

The week started with with some really strong winds but our early-week clients were veterans and didn’t want to lose out to the weather and got into some great fish.  This time, more pargo than cabrilla.  Nothing like a bit of experience to put some fish into the boat.   Although the winds were whippy early in the week, it calmed as the week went on and we had air-temps in the high-80’s and low 90’s. Perfect beach and fishing weather.

This time we actually put out some pangas for the first time with our La Paz fleet to go along with our Las Arenas fleet and both sides scored fish although it seemed like the numbers favored more pargo in the boats than yellowtail.  Some of these fish were real chunky power fish too!  Pargo in the 30- pound class and yellowtail in the 40 pound class were highlights. Still, quite a few fish were lost.  Sometimes, there’s just nothing you can do but hang on and know that your big fish is going to break off in the rocks.  Pretty powerless feeling to have your rod bend almost in half and all the strain on your arms and back then suddenly…POW!  Line breaks!

Chris Cribbs (photos above) had this to say which was not unusual this week.  Some tough days, but sticking with it paid off:

” Little bit of a rough trip- Sure you’ve heard- . . . Bait was tough and as windy as I’ve ever seen there !! Anyway never gave up – Got good bait Saturday- Beat everyone there and killed them- Big bitch-en fish !! Had a couple of monster Pargo snap off 50lb Fluro leader like it was trout line !!”

As well, we also had cabrilla, quite a few bonito and jack crevalle and sierra taken inshore as well.  Even a few dorado!

TAILHUNTER COMES TO SALT LAKE CITY THIS WEEK

We are just pulling out of Long Beach after the Fred Hall Fishing & Boating Show!  Had the usual awesome time.  To everyone who came by to say hi…old friends and new…to everyone who showered us with gifts and all the good food…homemade cookies, pizza, sandwiches, Chinese dimsum potstickers, cheese, See’s candy, pastries, homemade Mexican frijoles/ cheese and salsa, chicken, ribs, carnitas burritos and more…we never had a hungry moment!  We leave with great smiles and 10 pounds heavier!  You all rock!

Dentist Desmond Sjauwfoekloy, often calls us at the last-minute to book a quick get-away trip from his practice in Los Angeles and always does well. In two days fishing he slammed 4 big yellowtail every day in the 35-40 pound class fishing with our Captain Pancho. It was a wild week of yellowtail and pargo. Some days hit and some days miss, but overall, a solid week of fishing! Read Desmond's first-hand account below.

Take a look at the thickness of the bodies of these yellowtail that Greg Jaquez of Long Beach got fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet out've Muertos Bay. All these fish are 35-40 pound class fish!

Another of our amigos who comes running at the last-minute when he sees the fish are biting is Barry Mendelson who splits his time between Malibu and Cabo. In just a few hours, he spanked 3 yellowtail and pulled 3 nice pargo liso out've the rocks fishing with Captain Archangel.

Bill Zambriski from Long Island, NY, and Mark Martis from Redondo Beach CA have a long successful run of fishing in La Paz with us. In a matter of less than 2 hours their group caught enough yellowtail to send 6 guys home with about 100 pounds of fillets each! Check out these two fat yellowtail that were in the mix!

Not a bad day for Desmond! He fished two days and got 4 of these 35-40 pound class yellowtail each day! Slamming mossbacks just outside of Muertos Bay. He was fishing with Captain Pancho.

Take a close look at this photo! Yes...that's a yellowfin tuna and it's still WINTER! That's north Cerralvo Island in the background. Dan and Tony, members of the Ventana Fishing club live in the area and Gary Morris also on the boat sent me the photo. There had been rumors of some stray tuna around, but no one could confirm it! Well, the guys were fishing North Cerralvo and thought they had hooked another yellowtail and instead...SURPRISE! It was a YFT! So, yea...it's confirmed. There's some weird fishing going on with yellowfin tuna prowling around!

When I first posted up the previous photo showing the tuna, I got some sceptics telling me it was a "fish story" and that the fish had actually been caught at a different time of year. Well, take a look at this photo showing both Dan, Tony and Gary holding their tuna PLUS the yellowtail still wearing the same clothes as the photo above! Thanks to Gary for sending me the photos!

THE BIG SHOW is THIS WEEK! We leave the great sportsmans show in Boise, Idaho and drive to the Long Beach Convention Center for the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show this week. This is the largest outdoor show on the West Coast and goes from Wed. to Sunday. It promises to be crazy! Come check it...hunting, fishing, boat, camping...everything outdoor!

BIG YELLOWTAIL AND STUBBORN PARGO TAKE CENTER STAGE!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 27-March 6, 2011

For the most part, it’s hard to argue with winter weather in the upper 80’s for fishing and even the low 90’s although some days were surely more windy than we would have liked.  Still, overall some really solid fishing this week, especially with our Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay fleet.  Some days were better than others.  Some boats on a given day did better than others.  However,  we surely didn’t hear too much grumbling because the fish were definitely  biting!

The yellowtail were trophy-size sluggers!  Most fish were 35-40 pounders and a boat could hook 5 and only get one to the boat.  The next boat would land 8.  The next panga would land 6 or 7.  The panga next to that one would lose 3 and show a zero (good fishing…bad catching!).

But there’s no doubt yellowtail were on the feed and after two weeks, we’re officially into yellowtail season.  The fish were holding off high spots or up from dropoffs in several spots such as Punta Perico, South and SE Cerralvo Island, North Cerralvo and out of Muertos Bay.  Live bait worked best with a little bit of weight or else fast retrieved blue and white or yellow/white yo-yo iron.

As well, it was a good week for pargo also.  Lots of fish hooked. Lots of fish LOST to the rocks and inexperience or simply bad luck!

Just like the yellowtail, there were pangas that would hook 5, 6, 7 of these fish big fish and lose all of them or the next panga would hook 6 and land 4.  Just the nature of these toothy-beasts!  The largest of the fish we saw that made it back to the beach were in the 20 pound class but tales of much bigger fish were told by wide-eyed tired and frustrated clients.

But wait…there’s more!!!

We also had several small spots of yellowfin tuna show up!  What?  YFT’s in February and March?  Yup!  For several weeks, commercial pangeros have been taking a fish or two and some gringo locals have told us of seeing YFT carcasses on the beach where the commercial guys clean their fish.

Well, then several of our gringo amigos who live in the Ventana area actually got some of the tuna around north Cerralvo and it surprised the heck out of them as well.  They thought they had another yellowtail hooked and then when the fish got to color…WHOA!!!  What’s this?  WTH…IT”S a TUNA!!!

As if to underscore the wacky bite this week, another of our local gringo amigos, Mike Madlock from La Paz, got into two days of 12-18 pound dorado as well to go along with his yellowtail.

Things are heating up!  Here’s what our amigo, Desmond Sjauwfoekloy, from Los Angeles told us after 2 days and 8 big yellowtail:

“…  I should have stayed another day, but not bad at all for a last minute impromptu get-away!The fishing was great.  (Captain)  Pancho got us out there and we put the hurt on the fish, or was it the other way around?

It’s been years since I’ve gotten a quality yellowtail, and it was just one specimen after another.  The second day we left after another 4 yellows to get a few pargo. Frustrating when the seas are discolored all around you (from so many red pargo in the water) and they just won’t bite…  Nonetheless, the beer was cold, the sashimi fresh, and I always get to talk to a few interesting folks in the van.  Thanks for “hooking me up” and I’ll be down there again — no doubt another last minute phone call…”

TAILHUNTER TOUR BRINGS IT TO LONG BEACH CONVENTION CENTER THIS WEEK!

Finally, the big Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show hits the Long Beach Convention Center this week!  This is the oldest and largest of the outdoor shows and for us, after almost 9 weeks on the road and 8 shows, we’re looking forward to seeing all our amigos!  Check this video clip out:

We will be in our usual spot on Tackle Row next to Izorline.  It gets really crowded so the best advice I can give you to finding us is to look for the palapa (grass) roof on our booth!  That’s us!  We’ll see you there!

That’s our story!

Roger Thompson from Long Beach who recently built a house in Ventana shows off the kind of yellowtail we've been ripping pretty much most of the week. It's been the best yellowtail week of the season. Unfortunately, more fish lost than caught!

Lately, Donna Thomspson has been making a habit of outfishing her husband, Roger. Here she's showing off a great quad of big yellowtail that have been "on the chew" all week, especially for our Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay anglers.

We say goodbye to our 7th fishing & hunting show of the year (Denver, Billings, Sacramento, Puyallup, Salt Lake, Portland and Phoenix) as the 2011 Tailhunter Road Tour continues on. We've had an incredible week here in Phoenix AZ on the floor of the University of Phoenix Football Stadium where the NFL Cardinals play. By the time you're reading this, we'll be on our way towards Boise, ID for our next show which starts Thursday. Thanks to all our amigos new and old who came to say hi and book their 2011 trips to La Paz. We're headed back into snow country once again so we're breaking out the tire chains once more!

YELLOWTAIL AND PARGO PUT ON THEIR BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR…SORT OF!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 20-27, 2011

Well, if you were headed home at the end of the week, chances are you needed help with your ice chest.  It wasn’t wide open by any means, but this week had it’s moments that, for some of our anglers, were “world class” or they got their personal best fish.

You could fish for a day or two  and dink and dip on cabrilla, sierra and all the bonito you wanted.  Or you could fish all day and get all the frigate and pelicans you wanted and figure it was just “one of those days.”  Suddenly, your rod goes double-bendo and GAME ON!!!

Big yellowtail up to 40 pounds and pargo up to 25 or 30  pounds would suddenly roll up and then, it would be 2, 3, 4 fish on and hanging…and huge mossback ‘tails in the chum.  And, you either had your “A” game on and put a fish or two in the boat or…you had your chance and the waters would go silent again as you “zing-powied” a fish and got busted off or just got unbuttoned cuz you weren’t ready or because of “pilot error” not to mention that these fish are just HORSES when it comes to fighting attitude and are hunkered down in the rocks.

Sometimes, more often than not, no amount of skill or type of gear would have helped.  You’re just gonna lose.  It’s the nature of the beasts!  They have all the “edge” when they’re hooked and there’s not much you can do about it.   They can be extremely frustrating.  More than once, guys came back with not much in the box, but had tales of big fish they just could not stop before getting busted off.

Honestly, if you were judging our fishing simply by looking at the NUMBERS you might think fishing stunk!  But if you talked to our anglers or captains, you’d find out that that sometimes more than half the fish were lost that were hooked up.  In some cases boats came back to the beach with absolutely NOTHING but finding out that they hooked, 5, 6, 7 or more fish and every single one of the yellowtail or pargo broke them off!  Alot of first timers have a real healthy respect for some of our “winter” fish right now having been humbled more than once!

Hopefully, this is just the start.  In addition to the larger yellowtail and pargo, like I said, we also got into some decent cabrilla, sierra, rainbow runners, bonito and even an occasional dorado or two.  Some roosterfish were up on the beach and there was an unconfirmed rumor of tuna at the north end of Cerralvo Island that we’re trying to check out.

 TAILHUNTER HEADS TO BOISE, IDAHO

We pull up stakes in Phoenix and head now to our next sportsman’s show in Boise , Idaho where we’ll have the booth set up from Thursday to Sunday.  It’s our first time doing this show and it’s supposed to be a really great show in a great area where we already have quite  few of our Tailhunter amigos and clients.  We’re looking forward to it. Come say hi and talk to us about booking your La Paz fishing trip for 2011.

CABIN FEVER CLASSIC

Last call for our 2011 Cabin Fever Classic April 9-13 in La Paz.  It’s always fun and our 8th year.  We call it “Cabin Fever” specifically cuz it’s really the first opportunity to climb out’ve your crib and put your toes in the sand and hoist a cold one into the sunshine.  We have no idea what might be biting, but we always catch something and have a great time year-after-year!  It’s the only trip of the year that Jill and I personally escort.  For more information write us directly at riplipboy@tailhunter-international.com  Space is limited.

That’s our story!

It's hard not to be all smiles when you land a trophy yellowtail like this one that Darrell George of New Mexico pulled up in shallow water just off Punta Perico behind him. The big yellows are eating sardines and yo-yo iron.

Our amiga, Donna Thompson, out fished her husband, Roger, at the south end of Cerralvo Island, taking three of these big yellowtail to Roger's one! Live sardines did the trick. Reach Roger's first-hand account below.

Not bad for a first time trip...cabrilla (Mexican seabass) like this aren't easy to come by. Sure, they'll bite, but then you still have to get then outta the rocks! Ray Herrerra yanked this bad boy just out of Muertos Bay.

When you're hot...you're hot. Ray, from New Mexico, nailed two big cabrilla on his trip. Captain Victor looks on.

Big-eye jacks have moved into the shallow areas along the beaches and are great light tackle sport not to mention great eating. Lots of anglers confuse them with their cousins the jack crevalle which are also feisty, but don't taste very good at all so many anglers throw back the big-eye jacks. Our captains do a good job of telling our anglers which ones to keep! Speaking of good-eating, the seabass ready to fillet are great too!

Jill and I had a great time at the Portland Expo Center at the hunting and fishing show! We have so many amigos in Oregon. What a pretty state it is. But the Tailhunter 2011 Road Tour is on the move again! We set up in Phoenix Thursday to Sunday at Cardinal Football Stadium for the ISE show. Come say hi and book your 2011 La Paz fishing trip! We're filling fast! This is our friend Bob LeBeau the inventor of the Hunter Honer knife sharpeners goofing with us.

SOME BIGGER GRADE YELLOWTAIL FINALLY PUT A BEND IN THE RODS!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 12-20, 2011

A more typical week of fishing this past week.  At least in terms of weather.  The near-freezing stuff we had two weeks ago has been replaced with days in the high 7o’s and 80’s like normal with fishing more typical of the season.  Winds still blow northerly every few days, but overall, not an unpleasant week and fishing reflected it.  In fact, we had some real exciting stuff!

Inshore species continued to be the mainstay with jack crevalle, sierra, yellow snapper, big eye jacks and some smaller roosterfish primarily.  However, there were some other reasons to be optimistic as well. Some of the large pargo were hooked…and lost (which is not unusual) but at least we know the big boys are around.  As well, we had some really trophy sized cabrilla taken (seabass) and finally a few of the larger homeguard moss-back-style yellowtail.  There’s a few spots that just blue up nicely… All in shallow water not too far from shore. Literally within 50 yards off the rocky areas around Punta Perrico and near the south side of Cerralvo.

Roger Thompson’s wife (show above) got three nice fish and Roger had this to say:

” There is a HUGE school of yellowtail just off shore on the south east end of Cerralvo, where they are getting bait. We pulled up on 15 or 20 birds working the water and we saw hundreds of yellowtail in the water. ALL,  25 to 35 pounders! No shit! That was before we got sardinas. We trolled thru them with rapalas and tossed iron with no luck. We ran in and picked up bait and it was on!

We’ve got anglers going all week so hopefully, we’ll have more great reports to post up!

TAILHUNTER ROAD SHOW MOVES TO PHOENIX THIS WEEK!

The Tailhunter International 2011 Road Tour of all the best fishing and hunting shows in the West moves south this week.  In 7 weeks we’ve been in 9 states meeting so many great folks and talking about fishing with us in La Paz.  We have just left Oregon.

We’ll be in Phoenix this week at the Cardinal Football Stadium where the Cardinals play.  We’re right there on the stadium floor.  It’s a great place!  We’ll be there Thursday to Sunday so come by and get our new DVD and brochures and talk to us about your 2011 La Paz fishing adventure!

 That’s our story!

With waters showing a bit of warmth this weekend, jacks like roosterfish, jack crevalle and this African pompano are making more frequent forrays up into the shallow beaches. Great fish on flyrod or light tackle.

It's a little early to be seeing roosterfish this size normally, this time of year, but you just never know with these migratory fish. Captain Adolfo shows off a nice 20 pounder taken near Punta Arenas...famous as the "roosterfish capital of the world!"

Whale watching is in full swing over at Bahia Magdalena right now. Ask us about a great day-tour for the family. Thanks to bajatravelvacations.com for the photo.

Thanks and gracias to all our amigos who visited us this week at the Northwest Sportsmens Expo in Portland this past week. It was great to see so many of you including our buddy Bob Solee who's wife Becky always makes him bring is fresh chocolate chip cookies and milk to the booth...to keep up our strength. Jill and I will be making our next stop on the 2011 Tailhunter Tour at Cardinal Football Stadium in Phoenix 24-27 of February. We'll have our booth right there on the football field indoors!

It's not the biggest fish, but it's just a pretty early morning photo taken by Kate James who came all the way from snowy Boston this week and was happy as punch just to be out of the ice and cold so she took this photos of a cabrilla...first catch of the day!

WARMER TEMPERATURES RETURN…SORT OF…and BRING BACK A BITE!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 6-13, 2011

The week started off with a continuation of that cold snap from last week when temps dropped into the high 30’s and La Paz was more like Seattle than Baja, Mexico.  During that time, fish were locked down and not-responsive except for a few small cabrilla here and there.   However, things bounced back and the pendulum swung the other way and soon we were registering highs in the upper 80’s incredibly.  And just like that, we started to get fish.

Nothing very spectacular, but there were some exciting bites on small fire-cracker yellowtail in the 8-12 pounds and a few in the 25-30 pound class.  In addition to the yellows, we continued to get good numbers of cabrilla including one that went 18 pounds plus some pargo, sierra and bonito so all-in-all not so bad fishing.  A few nicer roosterfish too up along the beach.  Not all of them were in the “chew” mode, but a few were hooked and seeing them around is very enouraging for the next few weeks.

 WHALE WATCHING IN FULL SWING!

Whales at Magdalena Bay are in full swing right now and we’re offering daily trips out there for whale-watching tours which will usually last in through March.

 CABIN FEVER CLASSIC

We still have spots left for our Cabin Fever Classic set for April 9-13 with us in La Paz.  For more details e-mail us at riplipboy@tailhunter-international.com

RECORD COLD SNAP AND WINDS PUT MAJOR DAMPER ON FISHING

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 30-Feb. 6, 2011

I can’t remember the last time I’ve put out two weeks of fishing reports like this.  For those of you who’ve  been reading our reports all these years I’m sure you’ll agree.  This is the Baja and bad fishing reports are just…well, nuts!

Like the U.S. and seemingly most of north America, the weather has been the big issue.  As things north of the border were subject to cold, snow, wet and wind, the residual effects came south as well.  (Please keep it north from now on…everyone in La Paz is freezing cold!)  Although by comparison, 72 degree days and 50 degree nights is nothing if you’re in Boston or Canada this past week, it’s unseasonably chilly for southern Baja.  It actually dropped into the high 30’s a few times!  Actually, these have been record low temperatures and winds!   One of my amigas on the East Cape told me that the waves have been “like hurricane waves this past week!”

So much for global warming, but…  Everyone is wearing long pants and jackets!  Some Washington folks off a cruise ship laughingly called us “weenies” as they strolled on the beach in shorsts and t-shirts.

Probably the worst part is the northern winds that have forced cancelations of many activities from snorkeling and scuba to island trips.  It’s just too rough.  Even for fishing and many folks decided it’s best to just sit by the pool or walk around town.  I mean, at 72 degrees and sunny, it’s still not exactly stay-inside weather!  But, being on the water was not so good.  We didn’t cancel any of our fishing trips, but the hearty folks who fished with us were real gamers.

We did all of our fishing out of Muertos and that was about it.  Almost impossible most of the week to get to the island for bait or to fish too far out of the bay.  This is highly unusual.  Crazy weather.  But the guys still got some sierra and decent numbers of cabrilla.  Nothing big however.  And some larger pargo were lost.   By the time you’re reading this, things look to be on the upswing with temperatures this week heading back into the 80’s and winds diminishing…somewhat.  I have no doubt the fishing will swing back up as well.

From what I’m hearing around the peninsula this past week or so has got to be some of the toughest and poorest fishing in ages so it’s not just La Paz!  So much for global warming…

On the upside, the whales have arrived in good numbers over at Mag Bay and we had some great trips out there this past week at Lopez Mateos to do some whale watching in the lagoons.

Even if fishing is slow for other species, schools of voracious hard-fighting bonito like this one with Robinsion and Capt. Jorge off Punta Perrico still provide fun light tackle action.

San Diegans Kim and Bob Perry hold up a couple of nice barred pargo on the beach a Muertos Bay.

A STRANGE AND UNUSUAL WEEK

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January. 23-30, 2011

Well, to be perfectly honest, fishing wasn’t that remarkable this week.  It was a little cold and windy some days which is typical.  Fishing was so-so.  We got some sierra, and some cabrilla and some yellowtail, a pargo or two and a couple of dorado.  Everyone we sent out caught fish and had a nice time, but it was nothing to write home about.

That’s the truth.  One of those unusual weeks…really unusual!

But we also tell people it can be like that this time of year.  They understrand that.  They enjoy time on the water and since many of them come from freezing places like Minnesota and Colorado and New York, they’re happy just to be fishing instead of digging out of snow.  Fishing was not stellar…so what..it beats being in a blizzard.   Fishing might have been less-than-spectacular. But, it’s also Baja and it can change just as quickly too!  Wind predictions look better for this coming week so we plan to have better reports for you in the next weekly report.

 TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR  2011

Dorado in January! It's not typical, but a nice suprise but we're getting a few every week. Arnie and Kathy Sandness were on their first trip to La Paz this past week from Arizona and took this nice pair fishing with our Las Arenas fleet just out've Muertos Bay.

More typical of the fishing during the winter months are these cabrilla that are a great catch inshore right now. Most fish are about 3-5 pounds and can be found pretty much anywhere there's some rocky structure and have a habit of hitting hard and dashing back into their holes!

Gray whales have started moving into their yearly winter residence at Bahia Magdalena. For a great day trip, ask us about setting up a trip for you and your family.

It was great to see so many amigos at the California State Fairgrounds this past week at the International Sportsmen's Expo. It was a spectacular show and it was great to see so many of you and have you book your 2011 trips to La Paz. We now take the 2011 road tour to the Washington State Fairgrounds at Puyallup, Washington near Seattle. We'll be there Wednesday to Sunday. Come check us out!

DORADO AGAIN SPARK A MIXED BITE BUT YELLOWTAIL SHOWING SIGNS!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 17-24, 2011

About half the week it was pretty windy making it, not impossible, but certainly uncomfortable or difficult to fish.  Other days, it was actually rather nice.  We got a weird strange mix of species which kept it interesting.  A few small firecracker dorado mixed it up with sierra, bonito, some cabrilla and pargo made for quite a buffet of species.

Besides the wind, there was some red-tide that came into La Paz Bay that made me glad that we kept most of our fishing out’ve Las Arenas instead of La Paz.

However, we’re getting some really encouraging signs of yellowtail schools north of La Paz near and around Espiritu Santo Island.  We’re gonna send out s few exploratory trips because private boats and commercial pangeros are seeing some nice jags of breaking fish here and there right on the surface with some reports of larger 20-30 pound fish rolling and foaming in the upper water column on schools of bait.  We’ll keep you posted!

WHALE WATCHING TRIPS

The California grey whales are starting to arrive in Bahia Magdalena for their annual winter residence.  They usually hang out mating and giving birth through March and it’s a great opportunity to observe these great animals up-close in the warm calm waters of the lagoon.  Tailhunter can set up trips for you and your family.  riplipboy@tailhunter-international.com

TAILHUNTER 2011 ROAD TOUR

After 3 weeks that have taken us through 8 chilly states and 3 shows including Denver, Colorado; Billings, Montana and most recently Sacramento, CA, we now take the road to Puyalup, Washington at the state fairgrounds near Seattle.  We’ve had a great time seeing so many amigos.    We’ll have our booth there along with all our brochures and new DVD plus all the details you’ll need to set up your 2011 fishing trip to La Paz.  We’ll be there from January 26-30 (Wednesday to Sunday). Hope to see you!

2011 CABIN FEVER CLASSIC

We’ve still got some spots left for our 2011 Cabin Fever Classic Event for the 8th year.  The dates are April 9-13.  For more details, e-mail us at riplipboy@tailhunter-international.com   It’s always a fun event and space is limited!

Have a great week.  That’s our story!

We are definitely into sierra season with quite a few of these speedy sportfish around now which is great for inshore light tackle. Captain Ramiro holds up a nice one.

A fairly typical catch with our Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay anglers...decent size yellowtail and sierra...all close to shore.

Grey Whale Season is here...from January to March, the grey whales take up residence in the shallow warm waters around Bahia Magdalena. For a great family experience of a lifetime where you get up close with these great animals in the calm waters of Mag Bay. let Tailhunters set up your trip!

We've had a great time in Denver this past week at the International Sportsman's Expo. Great to have seen so many of our amigos. The Tailhunter International Road Tour 2011 heads to chilly Billings, Montana this week for the Great Rockies Sportshow. If you're in the area, come by the booth and book your 2011 trip fishing trip to La Paz.

ANGLERS WORK INSHORE FOR YELLOWTAIL,  SIERRA,  and ROCK SPECIES

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 2-9, 2011

Some cloudy skies and wind this week in between some really nice fishing weather.  Nice time to be in town.  I think most of our anglers this week have been surprised at the variety of fish.  Most of our fishing has been in the Muertos Bay area where even if the winds are a little blustery from the north, we can still be fairly protected since the fish are close and we’re on the lee side of the island.

Species this week included pargo and sierra as well as cabrilla, but also a nice jag or two of yellowtail.  Not big fish, but the yellowtail are certainly  getting a little bigger than in the last few weeks and fun on light tackle or using the iron.  The yellowtail were about 10 pounds before, but this week some skinnier 10-15 pounders were making themselves known.

The other species readily ate live and chunked dead sardines.  “Chunking” involves tossing handfuls of mashed and whole dead sardines into the current and letting it drift down.  Anglers then pin another dead sardine to a hook and strip off handfuls of slack line which also drifts down with the rest of the “chunk.”  It’s an effective way of getting stubborn fish like pargo, snapper, and cabrilla out’ve their rocky hideouts.  Of course, once they bite, you have to turn them quick to kee’p them from heading back into the hole and cutting you off.

 WHALE WATCHING SEASON

By the way, we’re also sending out whale watching trips now to Magdalena Bay as the grey whales have started taking up their winter residences in the shallow lagoons.  Usually, the whales are around from January to March with February being optimal for viewing with the whales and their calves often coming right up to the boats.

FISHING AND HUNTING SHOWS

If you’re going to be in the area of Billings, Montana, the Tailhunter International 2011 Road Tour will be moving from Denver to Billings this week.  Come by and pick up our new brochures and DVD’s and book your next La Paz fishing trip.  After that in two weeks, we head to the International Sportsman’s Expo in Sacramento CA at the State Fairgrounds.

That’s our story!

As Darrell George and Matt Collins from Colorado said, "It was pretty good fishing for December!" Actually, pretty good fishing any time of the year, but this shows the mix that was possible this last week with smaller yellowtail, dorado, pargo and sierra on the beach at Muertos Bay fishing with Captain Victor.

The 2011 Tailhunter Road Show has started! We'll be in our booth from Wednesday to Sunday this week at the downtown Denver Convention Center for the International Sportsmen's Expo. Come say hi and book your 2011 La Paz fishing trip!

GREAT MIX OF SPECIES TO END ONE YEAR AND START THE NEW ONE!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 26 to Jan 2, 2011

It’s been a real “chop suey” week of fishing here!  It’s like everything was all mixed up with both warm and cold water fish all in the same spots!  Literally, we must’ve had about 10 different species biting and some anglers got almost all 10 species fishing the same spot on the same day.  Small yellowtail have now moved in that are in the 10 pound class but we also got some amberjack up to 30 pounds as well as jack crevalle, pargo, snapper, cabrilla, bonito, and sierra.  But those same boats are still getting a smattering of dorado also…clearly a warm-water fish!

It just makes for some fun fishing when you get this kind of variety and all the fish are close to shore too eating live bait.

 WE’LL BE IN DENVER!

We’re on the road finally and will be in Denver starting Wednesday to Sunday at the International Sportsmens Expo at the downtown Denver Convention Center.  It’s always a great show and we’re looking forward to seeing all our amigos!  Our booth will be in the same location as always.  It’s freezing.  As I’m writing this, it’s 2 degrees above zero.  Definitely NOT La Paz weather and our van already broke down once in the snow!  But it’s always a great trip into the Rockies and we look forward to the tour every year.

This is the start of our road tour for the year.  Over the next 11 weeks we’ll be in 11 states doing all the major fishing/hunting shows so we’ll see you down the road.  Next week, we’ll be in Billings, Montana.  Then Sacramento CA.

That’s our story!  Happy New Year everyone!
