Tailhunter Fish Report

All the way from Florida, Tim Emory found our yellowfin tuna bite much to his liking. Note how close to shore they are! Yellowfin tuna continue to linger here and there although waters are cooling with some decent 10-25 pound fish still around. Amigo, Bob looks on...probably heckling Tim!

Warren Weisenberg sent me this photo of this incredibly fat wahoo he took just outside of La Paz Bay. According to Warrne, " It hit a dorado spread and nailed a 6 inch Paku Lua Caveman. Lucky I had beads over the mono as chafe protectors." Surprisingly, there have been some nice wahoo pickups really really close to shore and in shallow waters in the channel between the tip of La Paz peninsula and the south side of Espirito Santo Island.

Bob Sutke sports a good-looking bull dorado on the beach at Muertos Bay. Dorado continue to be the mainstay for most of the fishing around La Paz these days in terms of bluewater species.

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 14-21, 2010

Busy busy week here in La Paz.  The Baja 1000 is here and town is packed.  There has not been a hotel or condo available here for 2 months.  Plus, the famous Baja-Ha-Ha sailboaters are also in town plus there’s a big local fishing tournament as well.  So, town is packed!

Fishing has been great for dorado although you can tell conditions are changing.  It’s cooler with daytime temps a very sunny pleasant 82 degrees most days and nightime we’re all wearing sweatshirts now at 61 degrees!  But winds are getting more prominent, especially from the north which makes some of the fishing a bit choppier some days and certainly cooler out there on the water.  However, water temps have not really started dropping yet so fishing for bluewater species has been pretty consistent, especially for dorado. 

The mahi are the bread-and-butter fish right now with about 80 percent of the catch.  Most fish aren’t real big, but fun 10-20 pounders are the norm with fish willing to charge the boat on dead bait, live bait or take a small feather dragged behind the boat or a strip of fresh dead bonito or squid.  Quite a few of the anglers right now aren’t big-time fisherpersons per se.  Many are vacationers here in town for the holidays or on vacation and just taking a day of fishing with little or no experience. So they’re thrilled to have a boat load of fun dorado to pull them all over the place.  Easy to catch and fun to battle, not to mention great eating back on shore for dinner that night.

Other species we’re getting include some football sized yellowfin tuna, mostly with our Las Arenas/Muertos Bay fleet around the south end of Cerralvo Island and then on the drop off near Punta Perrico.  There’s still some wahoo around the south side of the island, but not many folks have been fishing for them and there’s also been surprisingly some wahoo just outside La Paz Bay as well with some good hookups in the past week as well as marlin.

Not bad for a first time fishing! Redondo Beach resident, Kurt Hoffman, got two nice wahoo fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet north of town. Tragically, he and his buddies were fishing on the same day they had to catch a plane out've town so they had to rush straight off the boats and off to the airport. All the fish had to be given away! Wahoo are still around, especially around Cerralvo Island.

Our good buddy, Mark Martis, has been coming down several times a year to visit us for at least 10 years and has caught a number of big fish during that time. He's here displaying a nice dorado he got this week. Dorado are pretty much 70 percent of our catch right now. A bit surprising given that conditions are cooling and not sure how long the waters will stay warm enough to support keeping the dorado around.

Our Las Arenas fleet, now shoving off of Muertos Bay, is still getting a few tuna here and there. It depends on conditions and the winds which are getting stronger. However, Captain Calamar holds up a nice fatty for the camera. Most of the fish have been 15-25 pounders.

This is just such a great photo underwater taken by our amigo, Tom Aurand, from San Francisco. He was giving scuba diving a try for the first time and took this of a bait ball of sardines from below. Great colors!

It's a long way from New York City to La Paz, but Neal Thomas got in some good fishing in his first visit with some dorado and sailfish fishing with our La Paz fleet.

Our Tailhunter Bar - for those of you who've visited us...we were packed to the gills (no pun intended) to overflowing with close to 400 people standing room only for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito fight on Saturday Nov. 13th. The sidewalk alone had 100 people down there standing shoulder-to-shoulder with folks waiting over 4 hours to get a seat on the 2nd and 3rd floor. Great party night!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 8-14, 2010

It’s that time of year between the busy fall fishing and the Thanksgiving holidays.  Folks have their agendas geared toward the holidays now so like many places in Baja, it’s a bit quieter here in La Paz right now.  Great time to be in town.  Weather is gettting cooler, but that’s “relative.”  By “cool” I mean it’s in the mid-80’s in the daytime and high 60’s at night.  Just really comfortable and sunny most days but it’s noticeably breezier on the water as we get more north winds and things move towards winter.

Without many folks in town, that also means fewer fishermen, but we’ve had our share of boats out all week.  I hate predicting what folks might be catching this time of year because there are so many variables with the wind, current and water temperatures as we transition towards December.   However, I have to tell you, I’m surprised at the quality of fish!

Despite cooler air temps, water temps are still warm enough to keep the dorado on the chew with boats getting limits or near limits of dorado most days.  Not alot of big bulls, but there’s surely enough action with 10-15 pound fish being the norm and great on light tackle with still enough density of fish where anglers can get into scorching crazy dorado bites and are releasing fish as fast as they can go.  Both our La Paz and Las Arenas fleets have been getting dorado pretty regularly.

As for tuna, I wouldn’t expect tuna to hang out this late normally, but it’s been a banner tuna year and our Las Arenas fleet, now on the beach at Muertos Bay.  However, each day, we’ve hit little jags of 10-25 pound fish near the deeper dropoffs just off the beach near Punta Perrico, S. Cerralvo Island and Punta Arena.  Not very far off the beach at all.

The nice plus is that we’re still getting wahoo as well in various spots around Cerralvo Island and are still getting billfish with several marlin and sailfish hooked and released or busted off this past week.

First timer to salt water fishing as well as La Paz, Peter Eastis from San Diego had a great day dorado fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet north of town.

Bob Gonzalez shows off a really nice tuna he pulled up off of Punta Gorda north of the La Ventana area across the channel from Cerralvo Island that continues to be a nice little spot for both tuna and dorado and the occasional wahoo.

It was another fairly good week on the dorado for both our La Paz and our Las Arenas fleets. Jarrett Pfost, of San Diego, shows off a good bull he took on light tackle.

Not as many tuna this week, but amigos Daryl Valdez from Arizona and Jim Bostion from Massachusetts hold up a couple of the nicer grade tuna types we've been taking with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

DORADO TAKE UP SLACK TO KEEP RODS BENT

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 1-7, 2010

Just when we were all putting on our sweatshirts and longer pants and proclaiming that warm weather was gone, we had to put our shorts and t-shirts back on and toss the tennis shoes for our flip-flops again.  Except for windier/breezier conditions, it’s been a really pleasant week overall.  Temps are in the mid-80’s and holding…for now!

But fishing-wise, there’s little indications that we’re slowly sliding into cooler fishing conditions.

For one, we’re seeing an increasing number of sierra inshore, offshore and in the bay.  These little speedsters that are great sport and can be mistaken for baby wahoo, are normally only seen when the waters get cooler.  The fact that we’re catching more of them is the equivalent of watching leaves turn to gold when fall hits.  It’s a pretty sure sign!

However, that being said, the blue-water pelagic species aren’t exactly running off the stage.  It was still a fairly decent week for yellowfin tuna in the 20-25 pound class although sometimes with the windier days, it was harder to fish for them.

Additionally, the dorado are still around as well.  Just like the sierra are harbingers of cooler water, the dorado are symbolic of warm waters and conditions and they’re still hanging out and willing to hit lines.  Most of the fish were 15 pounders, but 20-25’s were not unusual.  No specific spots for them.  They could hit at any times.

The epic wahoo bite of last week is gone, but that doesn’t mean the wahoo are gone. There were just fewer people fishing for them.  A few were caught…er…I should say “a few were HOOKED” but the fish bit them off.  So, the fish are still in that area around S. Cerralvo Island.

ALASKA AIRLINES HAS ADDED NEW TRIPS TO LA PAZ!

Alaska Airlines has just announced that it has added two more days of flights to La Paz direct to Los Angeles. This is great news bringing the total now to 5 days.  This past season, they only flew 3 days to La Paz.  Alaska Airlines is now flying:  MONDAY/ WEDNESDAY/ THURSDAY/ SATURDAY and SUNDAY!
